Physical Signs of an Alcohol Problem
While most of the changes related to excess alcohol consumption are related to internal organs and invisible to friends and family, some of these produce external physical symptoms.
🧑🏻 🧑🏾 Skin
The skin is particularly succeptible to chemical changes and imbalances and therefore visible to the naked eye.
- Redness and flushing can be caused by an increase in histamines.
- Appearance or aggravation of skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis or rosacea. Perhaps signs of infection or sores.
- Puffy or swollen eyes.
- Pronounced wrinkles, crow's feet, spider veins and dark circles.
- Bruising and bleeding caused by vasolidation .
- Dull, dry skin and lips.
🧍♀️ General
Heavy alcohol use adversely affects the organs resulting in visible signs.
- Weight gain is caused by drinking sugar loaded alcohol which also inhibits the body's ability to burn fat and carbohydrates.
- Swollen abdomen caused by liver disease
- Jaundice which is yellowing of skin and eyes due to liver dysfunction.
- Tremors or shaking especially in the hands.
- Slurred speech
- Unsteadiness even when sober
If you recognise these signs in someone, approach them gently and do not be judgmental. Explain that you have noticed these changes and are worried about them. If they become angry and defensive or deny any problem try to remember this is about them, not you.
Offer your support and encourage them to talk to someone who can help such as their doctor or a counsellor. Find information on support groups and organisations and let them know there is help available.
