Community guidelines
This community is for people concerned about their own drinking and people affected by someone else’s. Both deserve to be heard and treated with care.
You can ask questions, talk about what is happening, or read without saying anything. You do not have to accept a label, explain your whole life or have a plan before you speak.
Talk to people with respect
Disagree with what someone says without attacking them. No insults, threats, harassment, discrimination or humiliating people. Drinking again, staying with someone or feeling uncertain is not a reason to shame a member.
Share your experience; leave room for theirs
Say what happened to you and what helped you. Ask questions and listen. Do not tell someone what they must feel, diagnose them or pressure them to make the decision you made.
People can talk honestly about hurt, anger, resentment, fear and guilt. Keep the focus on what is happening rather than using the community to attack a person or a group of people.
Protect your privacy and other people’s
Conversations can be read without signing in. Use your username and leave out real names, addresses, phone numbers, workplaces and details that could identify you or someone else.
Do not post other people’s private messages, contact details or identifying information. Please respect the trust involved in someone sharing their experience here. The site cannot prevent a reader from copying a public post.
Keep medical decisions with qualified professionals
You can discuss your experience of treatment and recovery. Do not prescribe medicines, give personalised detox schedules or tell someone how to manage withdrawal themselves. A community reply cannot assess another person’s medical needs.
No selling or recruiting
No advertising, fundraising requests, requests for money, or recruiting members for services, research or private groups without the administrator’s agreement. Do not impersonate another person or claim qualifications you do not have.
If something concerns you
Use the Report link beside the post or reply and explain the problem. Reports go privately to the administrator. Reporting does not automatically remove a post.
The administrator can hide content, close a conversation, edit identifying or harmful details, or suspend an account. Edits are marked. The community is not monitored continuously.
For questions about moderation, contact editor@alcoholscotland.co.uk. Avoid sending more personal information than is needed to explain the issue.
When you need help now
The community cannot provide an immediate response. Use AS Help Now or Support Services to find practical help and contact services directly.
